Sixty Seconds

About seven minutes before touchdown, the computer on the lunar module Eagle flashed an alarm the crew did not recognize: 1202. Then 1201. Houston said keep going. The autopilot was carrying them toward a crater ringed with boulders, so Neil Armstrong took over and flew on, looking for open ground, while Buzz Aldrin called out height and speed. In Mission Control, Charlie Duke read the fuel clock aloud: “60 seconds.” Then “30 seconds.” Nine seconds later Aldrin said, “Contact light.” Then Armstrong: “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.”

It was 4:17 p.m. Eastern time on 20 July 1969. By NASA’s estimate 650 million people watched what came next. This is how a Cold War contest put twelve men on the Moon, what they left there that anyone can still check, why some people came to believe none of it happened, and how those doubts hold up.

Chapter 1

A beep from orbit

On 4 October 1957 the Soviet Union put a 58-centimeter metal sphere into orbit. Sputnik did nothing but send out a radio signal, but anyone with a shortwave set could hear it, and the rocket that launched it was a modified intercontinental missile. If Moscow could put a satellite over America, it could put a warhead there too. [1]

The man behind it was Sergei Korolev, whose name was a state secret while he lived. His team would go on to fly the first man, the first woman and the first spacewalk. [2] See why the race began.

Washington answered with money and new institutions. The agency now called DARPA was created in direct response to Sputnik. [3] On 29 July 1958 Eisenhower signed the law creating NASA as a civilian agency, so that America’s space effort could be shown openly to the world while the military kept its rockets. [4][5]

The rockets themselves came out of a war. After Germany’s defeat the U.S. Army brought Wernher von Braun and more than a hundred of his engineers to America. Their V-2 missile had been built partly by concentration-camp prisoners at the Mittelwerk factory, where thousands died, and von Braun had been a Nazi Party member and an SS officer. [6] That past was played down for decades. See the rocket men.

Chapter 2

A promise to Congress

On 12 April 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space, another Soviet first. [7] Six weeks later, and a month after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, President John F. Kennedy went before Congress and asked it to commit to “landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth” before the decade was out. [8]

At Rice University in September 1962 he gave the reason most people remember: “We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” [9]

In private he was blunter. On a White House tape from 21 November 1962 he tells NASA administrator James Webb that beating the Soviets to the Moon should be the agency’s top priority, and adds, “I’m not that interested in space.” [10][11] See why Kennedy wanted it.

Yet on 20 September 1963 he stood before the United Nations and asked, “Why, therefore, should man’s first flight to the Moon be a matter of national competition?” [12] State Department officials were still studying a joint mission after his death that November. Nothing came of it. [13] See the joint-mission offer.

Chapter 3

The bill

What Kennedy had asked for was enormous. NASA’s own retrospective puts Apollo at $25.4 billion; the Planetary Society rebuilt the figure from budget requests and arrived at roughly $260 billion in today’s money. [14][15] In fiscal 1966 NASA spent $5.933 billion out of $134.5 billion in federal spending, about 4.4 percent; it now gets well under half a percent. [16][17]

The money built the Saturn V, a rocket 111 meters tall whose first stage burned five F-1 engines. [18][19] Congress later credited “more than 400,000 individuals” with contributing to Apollo. [20]

Not everyone thought it was worth it. In most Gallup polls of the 1960s, fewer than half of Americans said the Moon effort was worth the cost. [21] On the morning of the Apollo 11 launch the Rev. Ralph Abernathy led poor families to the Cape to ask why the money was going to space. [22] See what Apollo cost.

Chapter 4

Learning to fly in space

NASA got there in steps. Mercury put six Americans into space one at a time between 1961 and 1963. [23] Gemini flew ten crewed missions in 1965 and 1966 and practiced what Apollo would need: flights of up to two weeks, rendezvous, docking and spacewalks. [24][25] Ed White made the first American spacewalk, outside Gemini IV, in June 1965. [24]

Robots scouted ahead. Ranger 7 sent back close-up pictures all the way down to impact in July 1964, after six failures. [26] Surveyor 1 soft-landed on 2 June 1966 and showed that the dust was not a deep trap that would swallow a spacecraft, a real worry at the time. [27]

The spacecraft also needed a brain. MIT’s Instrumentation Laboratory won the guidance contract, and NASA chose in 1962 to bet on the new integrated circuit. [28][29] Margaret Hamilton led the team that wrote the onboard flight software. [30] It was built to drop low-priority jobs when overloaded, a design that would matter on the day of the first landing. [28][31] See the Apollo computer.

Chapter 5

Fire on Pad 34

At 6:31 p.m. on 27 January 1967, during a ground test with the spacecraft sealed, Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee reported a fire in the cabin. All three were dead within minutes. [32][33]

The review board found the cabin filled with pure oxygen at more than sea-level pressure, surrounded by flammable materials, conditions it called “extremely hazardous”. The most probable cause was an electrical arc in wiring near the floor. It found “no evidence” of sabotage. [34] The hatch opened inward and could not be forced open against the rising pressure; NASA redesigned it, changed the pad atmosphere and stripped out flammable materials before anyone flew again. [33][35]

Thomas Baron, a quality inspector at the contractor North American Aviation who had criticized its safety practices, died in a car-train crash in April 1967, a week after testifying to Congress. [36] Congress created an independent Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel in 1968 because of the fire. [37] See the Apollo 1 fire.

Chapter 6

Christmas Eve at the Moon

On 9 November 1967 the first full Saturn V flew, without a crew, as Apollo 4. [38] Its second flight, Apollo 6, shook violently with pogo oscillations, and engineers fixed them. [39][40] On 11 October 1968 Apollo 7 put a crew in Earth orbit for eleven days. [41]

Then NASA took a gamble. Apollo 8, the first crewed Saturn V, carried Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders to the Moon, and on Christmas Eve 1968 they became the first humans to orbit it. [42] They read from Genesis on live television, and Anders photographed the Earth rising over the lunar horizon. [43][44][45] See the road to the Moon.

In March 1969 Apollo 9 flew the lunar module with a crew for the first time, in Earth orbit. [46] In May, Apollo 10 took a lander down to within about 15 kilometers of the surface and back, a full rehearsal short of touching down. [47][38]

Chapter 7

Sixty seconds

Apollo 11 lifted off on 16 July 1969 with Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. [48][49] It had company. The Soviet robot Luna 15 was on its way to the Moon to try to scoop up soil and bring it home first, and the Jodrell Bank observatory in England was listening to both. [50][51][52]

On 20 July, Armstrong and Aldrin undocked in the lander Eagle and began the descent. The computer flashed 1202 and 1201 alarms because it was overloaded; flight controllers judged it safe to go on. Armstrong took manual control to fly past a field of boulders. [48] In Houston, Charlie Duke called out the time left before the fuel limit: “60 seconds”, then “30 seconds”. Aldrin called “Contact light” at 4:17 p.m. Eastern time, and Armstrong reported, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” Post-flight analysis put the usable fuel remaining at about 45 seconds. [53] See Apollo 11.

At 10:56 p.m. EDT Armstrong stepped off the ladder: “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” [54] A camera on the side of the lander, swung down by a pull-ring, showed him climbing down. [55] The first pictures came through NASA’s Honeysuckle Creek station near Canberra; minutes later the Parkes radio telescope took over and carried most of the moonwalk. [56][57] NASA estimates 650 million people watched. [58]

The two men planted a flag, set up experiments including a laser reflector, took photographs and collected 21.5 kilograms of rock and soil. [54] They left medallions honoring the Apollo 1 crew and two Soviet cosmonauts who had died, and took a telephone call from President Nixon. [58] On 21 July, while Eagle was still on the surface, Luna 15 crashed into the Sea of Crises. [50][51] The crew splashed down in the Pacific on 24 July and went into quarantine. [49]

Chapter 8

“Houston, we’ve had a problem”

Apollo 12 launched on 14 November 1969 and set down about 180 meters from Surveyor 3, a robot that had been sitting there since 1967. [59][60] Pete Conrad and Alan Bean cut off its camera and brought it home. [61] Decades later NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter photographed both landers side by side. [62]

Apollo 13 lifted off on 11 April 1970. Fifty-five hours and fifty-five minutes into the flight, an oxygen tank in the service module burst. [63] Controllers reporting to flight director Gene Kranz began troubleshooting at once; within ninety minutes they were planning to use the lunar module as a lifeboat. The crew came home safely on 17 April. [63][64]

The review board traced the explosion to a change made years earlier: in 1965 the tank heaters had been switched from 28 to 65 volts, but their thermostatic switches had not been upgraded, and a long heater run during a pad test cooked the wiring insulation. [64] Apollo 14 did not fly until January 1971. [63] See Apollo 13.

Chapter 9

The last footprints

On Apollo 14, Alan Shepard, America’s first astronaut, walked on the Moon at 47. [65][66] The last three missions carried an electric rover and stayed three days. [67][68] On Apollo 15, David Scott dropped a hammer and a feather on live television; they hit the ground together, as Galileo predicted for a vacuum. [69] On Apollo 16, John Young and Charlie Duke explored the Descartes highlands and drilled cores more than two meters deep. [70][71]

Apollo 17 launched on 7 December 1972 with Harrison Schmitt, a geologist and the first scientist to walk on the Moon. [72] When the ascent stage lifted off, Ed Fendell in Houston panned the rover’s camera to follow it, timing his commands to allow for the radio delay. [73] Gene Cernan was the last to leave the surface, on 14 December 1972. No one has walked there since. [65][74]

In all, six landings put twelve men on the Moon and brought back 382 kilograms of rock and soil. [65] See the six landings.

Chapter 10

Why it stopped

The end began before the first landing. On 1 August 1968 NASA chose not to order more Saturn Vs beyond the fifteen already funded, and the production lines and tooling were later shut down. [75] Apollo 20 was cancelled in January 1970, and Apollo 18 and 19 that September. [76][74] The last Saturn V launched the Skylab space station on 14 May 1973. [77] See why no one went back.

The rivalry cooled into cooperation. In 1971 NASA and the Soviet Academy of Sciences agreed to work together, including exchanging lunar samples. [78] On 17 July 1975 an Apollo and a Soyuz docked in Earth orbit, two days after launch. [79]

Chapter 11 The hoax idea

The doubt

Two years after the last landing, a former contractor employee named Bill Kaysing began claiming none of it had happened. Historian Roger Launius dates his first claims to 1974; cultural historian Peter Knight dates the book We Never Went to the Moon to 1976. [80][81] Kaysing had left Rocketdyne in the early 1960s, before Apollo flew. When Jim Lovell told him to “tear up your manuscript”, Kaysing sued him for defamation and lost. [82] See Bill Kaysing.

The idea spread through film and television. On 15 February 2001 Fox aired “Conspiracy Theory: Did We Land on the Moon?”, and claimed afterward that doubt had risen to 20%; we found no poll behind that figure. [83][84] In September 2002 the filmmaker Bart Sibrel confronted Buzz Aldrin outside a Beverly Hills hotel, called him “a thief, liar and coward”, and was punched once; prosecutors declined to file charges. [85] See the Fox special and Sibrel and Aldrin.

Real gaps fed the doubt. NASA concluded in 2009 that the original Apollo 11 telemetry tapes had most likely been erased and reused; what survives is the converted broadcast. [86][87] See the missing tapes. But the share of Americans who say the landing was staged has stayed small: 6% in Gallup’s 1999 poll and 6% in Ipsos’s in 2019, with a 2021 national survey finding 12%. [21][88][89]

And the evidence that does not depend on NASA has grown. Orbiters from the United States, Japan, India and South Korea have imaged the landing sites. [90][91][92][93] Observatories still bounce lasers off the reflectors to within millimeters. [94] Scientists around the world still study the rocks. [95] And in 2009 Alexei Leonov, the first man to walk in space, said, “Only absolutely ignorant people can seriously believe that the Americans were not on the Moon.” [96] The theories, and how they hold up, are tested one by one below.

Chapter 12

Going back

On 1 April 2026 Artemis II launched Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and the Canadian Jeremy Hansen around the Moon. They splashed down off San Diego on 10 April after reaching 252,756 miles from Earth, farther than any crew before, beating the record Apollo 13 had set by accident. [97]

The road back has been slower than planned. NASA cancelled its VIPER rover in July 2024 over cost and schedule. [98] In February 2026 it made Artemis III a 2027 test in Earth orbit and Artemis IV the first landing, near the south pole, in 2028; the Artemis III crew was named in June. [99][100] NASA scheduled a briefing on speeding up Artemis for 23 October 2026. [101]

The old arguments came back too. During Artemis II, photos shared as proof of fakery turned out to be AI-made or old NASA pictures. [102][103] See Artemis.

What we know now

What we know now

Orbiters from four countries have photographed the landing sites. Observatories still bounce lasers off the mirrors. Labs keep finding new things in the rocks. Here is what has been checked since 1972, and by whom.

The critical path

The chain of events the historical account depends on, in order. Every theory has to explain away at least one link, and every link it removes needs people to fake it and keep quiet. Each step lists the evidence that it happened and who, outside NASA, can check it.

Where it started

Historian Roger Launius dates Bill Kaysing’s first claims to 1974, and Peter Knight dates the book We Never Went to the Moon to 1976. Fox’s 2001 special brought the claims to a mass audience.[4][5][13]

Why it lives

It arrived just after Vietnam and Watergate, when Americans had good reason to doubt what officials told them. The pictures are strange to eyes trained on Earth: no stars, a rippled flag, odd shadows. And it offers a simple test anyone can try, look closely and spot the flaw, while the answers need physics and archives.

If it were true

NASA, its contractors and hundreds of thousands of workers would have kept a secret for more than fifty years. So would the Soviet Union, which was tracking the flights, and observatories in Australia and Britain. The 382 kilograms of rock studied in labs around the world would be forgeries, and the hardware photographed from orbit by four countries would have been placed there some other way.

How it squares with the record

The sites have been photographed from orbit by NASA’s LRO and by spacecraft from Japan, India and South Korea, showing landers, equipment and trails where the surface photos put them. [6][14][15][16]

Laser stations still time pulses bounced off the reflectors the crews set out, to within millimeters, and the first echo came twelve days after Apollo 11 landed. [7][8]

The samples were shared with the Soviet Union under a 1971 agreement and are still yielding new science. The first meteorite recognized as lunar was not found until 1982, and was identified partly by comparison with Apollo rocks. [9][17][18]

Radio telescopes outside NASA’s control followed the flights, and the Soviet Union, which had its own probe at the Moon, never disputed them. Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov called doubters “absolutely ignorant”. [19][20][10]

A 2016 PLOS ONE model by physicist David Grimes estimated how fast secrets leak, using exposed real conspiracies (the NSA PRISM program, the Tuskegee study and an FBI forensics scandal). With NASA’s 1965 peak workforce of 411,000 people all in on it, a fake landing would very likely have been exposed within about four years. The model counts only people who actually knew, and Grimes calls his figures order-of-magnitude estimates; it allows a secret kept by about 1,250 people for ten years. [11][12]

What holds up False

It does not hold. Every independent line of evidence points to real landings. The one genuine gap, the lost original telemetry tapes, does not touch the samples, the reflectors or the orbital images.

Where it started

2001 came out in 1968, a year before Apollo 11, and set a new standard for filmed spaceflight. A 2015 film by T. Patrick Murray had an actor playing Kubrick “confess”.[1][2]

Why it lives

The timing is perfect, and the idea flatters a great filmmaker. It also gives the hoax idea a face: if anyone could have faked it, he could.

If it were true

The best-known film director of the era would have run a state secret alongside his own films, and every one of his collaborators would have stayed silent.

How it squares with the record

Kubrick’s widow’s spokesperson said Kubrick was “never interviewed by T. Patrick Murray” and called the confession “made up, fraudulent and untrue”. [2][3]

A 2023 video said to show the hoax set was partly behind-the-scenes footage from First Man, a 2018 film. [2]

Apollo footage shows what 1960s studios could not: dust flying in clean arcs with no air, and hours of continuous low-gravity motion. A hammer and a feather fell together on live TV. [4][5]

What holds up False

It does not hold. The confession is a staged film and the “set” footage is from a 2018 movie.

Who believes it

No camp is assigned here: our sources do not establish one, so we don’t guess.

Who has voiced it
Where it started

Kaysing raised the stars, the flag and the shadows; Fox’s 2001 special brought them to television.[11][12]

Why it lives

Anyone can look at the photos and see what seems wrong. The answers need knowledge of camera exposure, perspective and vacuum, which most people never needed.

If it were true

Thousands of still photographs and hours of film would have been made on Earth without a single physical error that experts could prove.

How it squares with the record

The flag had a horizontal rod that did not fully extend, leaving ripples, and it moves only when the astronauts handle the pole. MythBusters reproduced the motion in a NASA vacuum chamber. [1][13][2]

Stars are missing because the surface was in full daylight and exposures were short; Apollo 16’s ultraviolet camera, set for long exposures, photographed stars. [3][4]

Shadows bend over slopes and converge in perspective; a single lamp reproduced the Apollo effects. Studio lights would cast several shadows per object, which no Apollo photo shows. [5][2]

The ghostly TV images came from converting the slow-scan picture on Earth, and different stations’ copies show different flaws. [6][7]

Dark Moon repeats an anonymous Australian viewer’s story of a Coke bottle seen on the live broadcast, and says letters about it ran in The West Australian. Clavius reports that the paper’s chief librarian found no such letters. [10]

What holds up False

It does not hold. Each anomaly has a physical explanation that has been tested, several on camera.

Who believes it

No camp is assigned here: our sources do not establish one, so we don’t guess.

Who has voiced it
Where it started

The belts were discovered in 1958 by James Van Allen’s instruments. In 2014 a NASA video quoted an Orion engineer saying “we must solve these challenges before we send people through this region of space,” which was widely shared as an admission.[1][4]

Why it lives

Radiation is invisible and frightening, and the 2014 quote sounds like NASA admitting the problem was never solved.

If it were true

The dosimeter readings for all nine crews would be invented, and so would the physics of the belts as later spacecraft measured them.

How it squares with the record

The belts are zones of trapped particles, not a wall. Apollo trajectories crossed them in a few hours, avoiding the most intense regions. [1]

Crew-average skin doses ranged from 0.16 rad on Apollo 8 to 1.14 rad on Apollo 14, averaging 0.46 rad; no crew exceeded the annual limit for radiation workers. [2][3]

The 2014 engineer was talking about Orion’s electronics on an uncrewed test flight. [4][5]

The real danger was luck: a huge solar particle event struck on 4 August 1972, between Apollo 16 and 17. [3]

What holds up False

It does not hold. The doses were measured and were low; the danger Apollo did face was solar storms, and it was lucky.

Who believes it

No camp is assigned here: our sources do not establish one, so we don’t guess.

Where it started

The superpowers began cooperating in space soon after Apollo 11, signing a sample-exchange agreement in 1971; theorists read that cooperation as the price of silence.[1]

Why it lives

It answers the strongest objection to a hoax, the rival’s silence, and Cold War governments did make secret deals.

If it were true

A secret would have survived the collapse of the Soviet Union and the opening of its archives, and Soviet scientists would have faked their own analysis of Apollo samples.

How it squares with the record

Luna 15 was at the Moon during Apollo 11 and crashed on 21 July 1969; Jodrell Bank recorded both spacecraft. [2][3]

In 2009 Alexei Leonov said “only absolutely ignorant people” could believe the Americans did not go to the Moon. [4]

Soviet scientists studied Apollo samples under the 1971 agreement. [1]

What holds up False

It does not hold. There is no record of a deal, and Soviet witnesses said the opposite.

No camp is assigned here: our sources do not establish one, so we don’t guess.

Who has voiced it
Where it started

Thomas Baron, a North American quality inspector, wrote a long report on sloppy work and died in a car-train crash about a week after his charges were aired before Congress. Betty Grissom later sued the contractor and settled, and in 1999 Scott Grissom described a metal piece he thought was suspicious.[2][3][4]

Why it lives

The deaths were real and avoidable, the inspector’s death was a terrible coincidence, and the family itself raised questions.

If it were true

Someone inside the program would have murdered three astronauts on the pad and arranged a second death to hide it.

How it squares with the record

The review board found pure oxygen at high pressure, flammable materials and a probable electrical arc, and “no evidence” of sabotage. [1]

Some North American officials later told Congress that about half of Baron’s charges were well-grounded: evidence of negligence, not murder. [2]

In 2000 NASA examined Scott Grissom’s metal piece at Rep. James Sensenbrenner’s request and concluded it had been cut from a bracket after the fire. [4]

What holds up Unproven

The negligence is documented; the murder is not. No evidence of sabotage has been found.

Who believes it

No camp is assigned here: our sources do not establish one, so we don’t guess.

Where it started

By April 1970 many viewed the mission as “routine”; the explosion came minutes after a TV broadcast and held the world for four days.[1][2]

Why it lives

The motive is plausible on its face, and the drama was perfect television.

If it were true

NASA would have faked a design failure, then spent months publicly fixing a problem that did not exist and delayed its next flight by nine months.

How it squares with the record

The review board traced the explosion to tank heaters switched to 65 volts in 1965 without upgraded thermostatic switches, a flaw NASA documented publicly. [3]

Telemetry, voice loops and the crew’s photos of the damaged service module agree, and NASA redesigned the tanks before Apollo 14 flew in January 1971. [3][2]

What holds up False

It does not hold. The record shows an embarrassing engineering flaw, not a staged crisis.

Who believes it

No camp is assigned here: our sources do not establish one, so we don’t guess.

Where it started

NASA searched for the original Apollo 11 telemetry tapes from 2006 and concluded in 2009 that they had almost certainly been erased and reused.[1]

Why it lives

This is the doubters’ strongest point because it really happened, and it was careless.

If it were true

Erasing the tapes would have hidden something the converted broadcast and the rest of the record do not show.

How it squares with the record

The loss is real. Between 1970 and 1974 NASA pulled about 200,000 tapes from storage for reuse, and its search leader Dick Nafzger called it the “inescapable conclusion” that the Apollo 11 tapes were among them. [1]

What was lost was a higher-quality copy of the TV signal, not the only evidence: the broadcast survives in several copies, which NASA restored. [2][3]

Some broadcast tapes bought at a 1976 surplus auction sold for $1.82 million in 2019. [4]

What holds up False

The loss is documented; the cover-up is not. A tape shortage explains the erasure, and it removes none of the physical evidence.

In 2016 astronaut Don Pettit said “we destroyed that technology and it’s a painful process to build it back again”; the quote spread as an admission.[3]

Why it lives

It turns a real puzzle, why going back has taken so long, into proof.

If it were true

The Saturn V factories, the missions and the cancelled flights would all be part of the cover.

How it squares with the record

NASA stopped ordering Saturn Vs in 1968 and the production lines closed; Apollo 18–20 were cancelled in 1970. [1][2][5]

Pettit was arguing for going back, not saying the first trips were faked. [3]

    What people say

111 things people say about the Moon landings, checked

Some of what people repeat about Apollo is exactly right, some is half-remembered, and some never happened. Each claim below is set against mission records, independent tracking, the samples and the physics, with the points for and against and a link to the full entry.

    What the ratings mean
    • Documented Shown by primary records, mission data, physical samples, independent measurements or official findings. The claim as stated holds up.
    • Partly true A real fact sits inside the claim, but the popular version adds, omits or overstates something material.
    • Mixed Parts of this are documented and parts are not; the entry separates them.
    • Disputed Credible evidence points in more than one direction, or informed people weigh the record differently.
    • Unproven Not established by any public record available on 23 October 2026. It may be believed; it is not shown. Not the same as false.
    • False Contradicted by mission records, physics, independent measurements, samples or other primary evidence.

Where the record is solid we say so. Where it is thin or lost, such as the original Apollo 11 telemetry tapes, each entry says what the sources cannot settle. Theories get their strongest case before the evidence is weighed. Nothing here is the last word; if you find an error, the disputes page is the place to tell us.
